I've been thinking of buying a server and setting up a VPN on it. It would be Netherlands based so things that are (Let's say not-so-legal) will be allowed  It would be PPTP so you just use the windows VPN config to connect to it. (I would get a program client if it becomes popular) Every user would get their own username and password. The prices would be probably just $1 or $2 a month and $10 lifetime. The IP would not be blacklisted so it would seem like a real home IP address. And of course I would be buying more servers from more locations (London, New York, Sydney) if I get a lot of customers. So would you guys buy it?
When I get a new computer i probably would , would depend on if you keep logs or not though, and the available locations.
Here is an issue with VPN's.. and Rifter, your server may be located in the Netherlands, however, YOU are located in the US. Let's say you had a user sign up for it, and he began downloading.. let's say quite a bit of torrented movies, games, and let's say he got wild and downloaded child pornography or something else highly illegal.. i.e. confidential files. So, let's say it gets brought up somewhere he is downloading massive amounts now, eventually his ISP or.. someone will catch on to what he is downloading, and issue a way to search the PC, they will find he is connected to a VPN through your VPN Service, a quick call to your server hoster, they will then tell them your information who is behind the host. They would contact the authorities within days, and you will be in quite a bit of trouble, while it was him who was downloading it, you provided a "secret tunnel" to allow it to happen under the eyes of his ISP. This is just somethings that can happen to someone who is inexperienced in this field. Also.. another danger would be that EVERY download is monitored somehow and somewhere, your server host, depending on who it is, will be watching your bandwidth spike upon downloads, and also will see you're running a VPN service using their servers, this is not only bad for them, but also bad for you, as they can sue, and most likely will if the downloads are substantial enough. Bottom of the story is, Rifter I wouldn't suggest doing this, unless you know what you are doing.. Big VPN providors like "Tor" and so on, have people with TON's of experience behind doing this.. and they know for a fact what they are doing. You cannot provide the same tools they do, nor could you provide the same confidentiality between you and your clients as them. I am just forewarning you, while it seems like a good way to make some money, it only takes one guy to join in and screw it all up for you, and everyone else. This is again, a warning. Please do not do this, unless you know for sure what you're doing.
as what Glam said its extremely funky area, before you spend money looking into legislation so you do not get shot in the foot for trying to make some extra cash, recently in the news there were hosting companies doing the same and they had been infested with childporn and all that crap. just have a look before you jump the gun.
I do know what I'm doing and I would be sure to keep complete anonymity. I'd be untraceable as well as the users as long as they stay smart and don't do something as stupid as say stealing government files.
LOL, Stealing Government Files that would pretty very stupid thing to do wouldn't it?. I bet kids probably would go for it, LOL.
Alright Rifter.. then please go take the risk associated with it.. don't say I didn't warn you. Been in this field for quite some time now.. I know what happens and I have seen it. I highly doubt you know how to encrypt protocols going across multiple Internet connections and even create logs to then decrypt it.. As it would be necessary. I would go more into depth of what you will need and so on.. but it would be a rather long post.
