Ahead of its launch next week (and EA Access launch on 12th Nov), EA and DICE have released a load more details on Star Wars: Battlefront, including info on its Star Card system and Blasters. Star Cards essentially dictate your loadout, with Impact Grenades, Personal Shields, Jump Packs and other stuff available to take into battle as part of your Star Cards hand.
Weapon Designers Christian Johannesén and Tommy Rydling offer some insight into Star Cards, stating that they "give you the freedom to play the way you want. Since there are no fixed classes in Star Wars Battlefront, Star Cards take their place as you pick and match them in three-card hands. In one situation you may want to go long-range – then you’d craft a Star Card hand for that. Or, switch to your second hand of Star Cards if you find yourself needing to take out a vehicle at long range."
To obtain more Star Cards, you can spend in-game credits on them as you level up. You'll begin with an empty hand with room for three cards, and you can change your setup as you see fit. And when you partner up, you're also able to copy your partner's hand of Star Cards, meaning even if you're low ranking and your partner has a higher rank, you can take their Star Cards for a spin during a match.
Star Cards can also be upgraded in exchange for credits via the Unlocks menu, and once its upgraded, the weapon or item will take on a more powerful form, as signified by a black background colour for that particular card. Then there are Charged Star Cards that "grant you a benefit for the duration of the card’s active time but in turn they require a charge in order to be activated." These include Scan Pulse, Ion Shot and Personal Shield and are equipped in your centre Star Cards slot.
A fourth card slot is also reserved for Powerups, where any blue icons picked up during battle - heroes/villains like Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Han Solo, Leia Organa, Boba Fett and Emperor Palpatine, vehicles or items like the Thermal Imploder - are stored until you're ready to use them. You can read more here.
There's also some detail on the range of blasters you'll have at your side (rather than hokey religions), with each possessing its own unique damage attributes, balancing and fire rate. In fact, there are 11 different blasters, with the close-to-medium range E-11 and A280C with high accuracy and good damage rate, and the standard blaster pistols like the DH-17. If you're after something with solid damage and good range, then a heavy blaster like the DLT-19 will serve you well. There's the semi-auto SE-14C blaster pistol too, which is one of Johannesén and Rydling's favourites.
Shotgun-style weapons like the CA-87 shock blaster are great for tight corridors, where you can hit opponents with a one-shot kill. All blasters will also have different cooling power, determining how many shots you can fire off before it overheats. A DLT-19 heavy blaster can fire 40 bolts before overheating, while Han Solo's DL-44 pistol can fire 10 before getting too hot. Time a button press while your weapon is cooling, and you can effectively 'active reload' to extend the cooling power and keep on firing. There's more on blasters here.
Star Wars: Battlefront launches for Xbox One, PS4 and PC on 17th November.
