More reports seem to confirm that Sony will be revealing a PlayStation branded VR headset for PS4 at its ‘Driving the future of innovation’ session at this year’s GDC, on Tuesday, March 18.

The sources quoted are “developers familiar with the tech” with prototypes already apparently out in the wild. The word is that “Sony’s VR headset is far superior to Oculus Rift’s first incarnation” although there’s the new HD Crystal Cove Rift model on the way to compete with.

There’s apparently very little software currently but it’s suspected there will be something from Sony’s first party studios, most likely a tech demo. This lines up with previous reports that Sony’s VR headset GDC reveal would focus on tech, with games following at E3.

Most significantly Sony’s session is to be presented by senior SCEA R&D names, Richard Marks and Anton Mikhailov. They were behind PlayStation Eye and Move so their expertise in cameras, visual tech and motion control are a good match for VR. Plus they generally only get wheeled out when there’s something really important to talk about. The headset is apparently the work of the PlayStation research and development team and will be branded as a PlayStation product. Shuhei Yoshida also there and the talk is apparently being stressed as “not a session development partners want to miss”.

Recent speculation also suggests Driveclub‘s delay is partly to due to it being reworked as a VR game. Recently Sony stated the game had gone back to the drawing board.
