Rumor: Apple to launch Retina MacBook Air later this year

According to supply chain sources cited by Digitimes, Apple is working on a MacBook Air featuring a Retina display with launch expected later this year. It is very likely that this could be the much rumored 12-inch MacBook that the company is allegedly working on, although there’s no confirmation of that as of yet.

It is unlikely that Apple would fragment the market by launching a non-Retina 12 inch MacBook. One possible theory is that this new model could replace the 11-inch MacBook Air, which would give users the option to choose from a 12 and 13 inch models respectively.

This will also throw away predictions made by analysts which suggested a drop in MacBook sales this year. Apple has long been expected to use a Retina Display on the MacBook Air, so this move won’t surprise us.

The 12-inch MacBook has been rumored to feature a display resolution of 2304 x 1440, compared to the 13-inch Retina display model which features a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels. This 12-inch MacBook could also feature a redesigned trackpad and a unique fan-less assembly according to rumors.

The MacBook Air was upgraded last year with better battery life and the latest Intel Haswell processors, so this could be a pretty massive update to the lineup.
