So, PlayStation VR has hit the market and it seems the big news around it the moment is that it’s compatible with both Xbox One and PC. Pretty cool, but is it worth getting excited about? Probably not... Unless you have a PlayStation 4 too, that is.

Here’s how it works if you want to try it out…

Step 1 - Take the HDMI lead from the PlayStation VR headset (the one you’re supposed to plug into a PS4)

Step 2 - Plug it into an Xbox One or PC instead

Yes, it really is that simple! No need for complicated hacks here, and you can put the soldering iron away. Just plug your headphones into the PlayStation VR headset for sound and you’re done!

Don’t get too excited though… What you’ll see once you’ve connected is essentially just your Xbox One or PC screen, but right in front of your eyes. This means Xbox One and PC gamers who were hoping to try out the immersive gaming technology will be sorely disappointed.

So, using a Playstation VR headset with an Xbox One or PC won’t suddenly make your console virtual reality enabled. In fact, we’re fairly sure that you’re better off just using your TV as normal for playing games...

Reports suggest that using the PSVR headset with an Xbox One or PC will actually result in a poorer gaming experience. Without a PSVR compatible game to play, you won’t be able to take advantage of the 360-degree audio or the intuitive head tracking - basically the fun stuff!

All this is really doing is taking advantage of the PlayStation VR’s ‘cinematic mode’, which is exactly what it sounds like, a cinema screen right in front of your eyes. The truth is that you could probably connect the PSVR to any console that has HDMI capability, including the Xbox 360 and WiiU.

So, should you buy one? Not unless you also own a PlayStation 4, or you have more money than sense... (in which case you would probably already own a Playstation 4). It just isn’t worth the money for the severely limited features you’ll be able to use without owning a PS4 also. Although it can be fun for a while, the novelty would more than likely wear off after a couple of hours of gaming, especially when you realise you were better off playing in the traditional way, you know, with a TV…

That being said, it does give gamers some hope that future technologies will be cross-console (and PC) compatible. Earlier this year, it was rumoured that Microsoft and Sony were considering a deal that would see users be able to play together online. It’s not apparent how much truth was in the rumours, just that it would be possible. Now, that would be worth getting excited about!

Until then, Xbox One and PC gamers will have to keep waiting for their own virtual reality technology… Sorry guys!
