Overwatch’s 7th competitive season starts right now at 5:00 PDT today (or Wednesday, November 1 at 00:00 UTC), and Mercy continues to control the current meta.

Thanks to the drastic changes to Mercy’s abilities last season, her resurrection skill in particular continues to determine which heroes, team compositions, and playstyles have the most viability in the game right now. Getting the first kill, and thus a temporary 6v5 advantage against the enemy, doesn't mean you can dive in and overpower the rest of the team like it used to. Mercy's “rez” now has the power to restabilize a team after they have a player picked off during a fight. And this difference is what has shifted the current overarching strategy within the game - also called the “meta”.

A Mercy nerf is supposedly in the works: Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan mentioned in a recent developer update video that his team is “experimenting with different toned-down versions" of Mercy. However there are no Mercy changes currently in the PTR (Public Test Region) so we shouldn’t expect any changes to her for at least a month.

So, if you can’t beat Mercy, join her…..or choose heroes that are really good at beating her! Here’s my take on the best heroes right now in the current “Mercy-Meta”.

The typical match right now is being driven toward a more deathmatchy/brawler playstyle, and so is the team composition. Heroes that can do a lot, a lot of the time, are in general going to be more successful as we start season 7. While i'm personally not happy about this, I think the game nevertheless remains extremely balanced. There are still many different options/playstyles/counters that you can still make work. But one thing is certain, the best pick is Mercy (if only because NOT having a Mercy against a team that does is a huge disadvantage) And, I believe the most advantage/disadvantage swaying picks other than her would be the other support and tanks on the team.

Just as a side note before we continue: I consider Junkrat to be the most powerful DPS (Damage Per Second) hero right now. However the DPS heroes on your team won't change the game as drastically as your support/tank pick right now because this is a meta that favors damage output -- so really all DPS heroes are nevertheless extremely viable. There is more variation within the tanks and supports (other than Mercy), and the ones with aspects that best support the Mercy-Meta playstyle are the ones that rise to the top currently.

Best support to pick with Mercy:

Zen used to be a somewhat risky pick, and a more stable support like Lucio used to be more viable, however the meta now encourages heroes who can do a lot for the team, even at the risk of getting picked off - because there is often the Mercy rez in your team’s back pocket. Zenyatta can do a little bit of everything (including supporting mercy which is the most important aspect of winning right now). Zen can do a lot of damage at a variety of ranges while simultaneously healing teammates and boosting their damage. Yes, Zen is a little bit of a jack of all trades, master of none - but this is exactly what is useful in this meta. Zen also has a very powerful Ultimate ability that is the most efficient way to heal everyone (including mercy).

    Best tank pick right now:

Like Zenyatta, Roadhog is a very strong teammate right now because he can do a little bit of everything. All of his skills are very useful in the current state of the game, and these skills are made stronger in synergy with Mercy. Roadhog can deal substantial close and mid-range damage, hook the enemy Mercy out of the air (or when she dives to rez), and Hog’s now mobile self-healing can keep him alive though the mid-fight.

Roadhog can stay alive seemingly forever sometimes, and this is good both to support his team as well as combat the enemy. He can live through a long fight eating up and dealing tons of consistent damage, while both team’s Mercys continue to rez their teammates. His Ultimate remains very useful as always, and possibly the best thing about having Roadhog on your team is that he has no direct counter! Sure there are certain heroes that are better than others at dealing with Hog, but even Reaper, who is arguably the most powerful at countering him, struggles due to the power of Roadhog’s self-heal as he waddles around through a heated firefight.

So basically the name of the game at the start of Season 7 is: frag faster than the enemy can rez. Whether you like it or not, Mercy is dictating everything right now. But the game is nevertheless extremely balanced -- as long as you always have her and her new rez ability in mind. All heroes are viable, but some picks will take more teamwork, more intelligent playing, more conscious and consistent effort to remain as viable as heroes who are either high powered or perfect within the mercy-meta.

Good luck this season! I hope you hit all your goals! Let us know in the comments what you want to achieve in season 7 and who you think the best heroes are right now!
