As Game Informer's big cover story for its February issue, a load of new details on DOOM have emerged from the magazine, revealing some salient information about Bethesda and id Games' hellish FPS, due to launch for Xbox One, PS4 and PC in spring 2016.
Broken down into bulletpoints over on NeoGAF, the Game Informer piece reveals that the chainsaw is now more powerful than ever and is assigned its own spot on the d-pad rather than the weapon wheel. The BFG, meanwhile, is assigned to its own face button and described as "a panic button" of sorts, for when things are getting a little too hairy.
Weapons also now have mods to track down, like a remote detonation upgrade for the rocket launcher, while exploration will use the old DOOM trope of coloured keycards to access new areas and secrets, some of which demand backtracking.
Upgrades won't be restricted to weapons, as your character will also acquire permanent upgrades, like the ability to mantle or swap weapons faster, increase health, ammo count and so on. Perk runes can also be equipped and swapped out, granting further perks like speed boosts and such.
Locations in the game include the surface of Mars, Lazarus Facility and Titan's Realm and will boast greater verticality, while a new enemy known as a 'Summoner' will make up what's described as "a demon avalanche", pointing to far more enemies on screen at any one time.
As for the plot, it apparently revolves around a character called Dr. Olivia Pierce who unleashes DOOM's marauding hellspawn in some sort of religious cult ritual. Other new details reveal a new Domination-style multiplayer mode named Warpath, a Last Team Standing-type Clan Arena mode, and swappable 'hack modules' unlocked as you progress in multiplayer.
Multiplayer also has more weapons not seen in single-player, such as a so-called 'lightning gun'. DOOM's in-game map builder SnapMap is also mentioned, and means no mod tools beyond the included feature will be available. Using SnapMap, users can create tower defence, single-player missions, VIP escorts, racing challenges and other games, complete with custom AI and the ability to share your creations on the DOOM SmartHub.
DOOM will be coming to Xbox One, PS4 and PC in spring 2016, although a 30th June 2016 release date was seemingly outed by Amazon France earlier this week. Check out some new DOOM screens below.
