A good site to check and see if an xbox gamertag is available or just to do a gamertag search is GamertagSearch.com Just enter the gamertag you want in the search box and hit enter. If the results page tells you that it is available then you can get that gamertag. If your gamertag search comes up with another players information then it is taken.
