An email in circulation, promising readers that they can be some of the first in the world to play Grand Theft Auto 5 on PC, has been exposed as a scam by an internet security firm.

The message, posted below, promises an exclusive invite to the beta version of Rockstar's long-rumoured PC edition of GTAV.

Instructions in the email explain that a promo code is supposedly contained within an attached file labelled 'BKDR_ANDROM.ATG' - however the file is malware that turns over control of certain computer systems to malicious users.

Rockstar has not announced GTA5 for PC, though it is widely assumed that a version is in development (all previous games in the series have shipped on PC). Further rumours suggest GTA V will release on PS4 and Xbox One at a later date, though this is less certain.

Publisher Take-Two has yet to announce plans for Grand Theft Auto V DLC.

"Even though the existence of a PC version of GTA V is an unproven rumour, cybercriminals still managed to make convincing bait out of it," said a spokesperson for anti-spyware firm Trend Micro.
