The National Museum of Scotland is to host an exhibition dedicated to iconic video game designers.

Game Masters was curated by the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, and following a successful initial run it is now in the process of a worldwide tour.

The National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh will be the only European venue for the tour, where it will run from Friday December 5, 2014 to Monday April 20, 2015.

Over 100 playable games will be on display at the exhibition, which "celebrates the work of the world's most innovative and influential videogame designers".

Among those designers featured at Game Masters are Shigeru Miyamoto (Mario), Peter Molyneux (Populous), Warren Spector (Deus Ex), Tim Schafer (Monkey Island), Hideo Kojima (Metal Gear Solid), Yuji Naka (Sonic), Tomohiro Nishikado (Space Invaders), Ed Logg (Asteroids), and Toru Iwatani (Pac-Man).

The role played by smaller indie developers will also be explored, with sections dedicated to Halfbrick (Fruit Ninja), Markus Persson (Minecraft), Rovio (Angry Birds) and others.

"We're delighted to be the only European venue for this major exhibition which promises to be both hugely entertaining as well as giving context to the evolution of the design and creativity behind some of the world's favourite games," said Cherie McNair, head of exhibitions and design at National Museums Scotland.

"Game Masters received a really positive reaction in Australia, and we believe it will be big draw here in Edinburgh, especially over the Christmas and Easter holidays."
