Trion Worlds plans to make its MMO shooter Defiance free-to-play on Xbox 360, though dates and details are still under discussion. The PC version will be free-to-play from 4th June. "New players will be able to jump in to experience the entire Bay Area storyline, original end-game content and future missions completely for free," reads a press release. "So fuel up your roller, load your weapons, and get ready." Defiance, you might recall, is also the name of a live action TV series that's tied to events in the game's world - while exploring the latter, you'll run into cast members and undertake missions on their behalf. "Brand new missions are on the way that will further unfold the unique storyline, coupled with the second season of Defiance, the television series from Syfy," the release adds. Xbox 360 owners will still be able to buy Defiance upfront as a boxed or downloadable game for additional bonuses, if that's preferable. Here's what you'll get on top of the base game. A grant of 1,000 Arkforge, a currency redeemable for resetting weapon mastery, upgrading your weapon's power rating, or even bumping an uncommon weapon to epic rarity. 4 Character Slots, 5 Loadouts, up to 75 Ark Keycodes, and a minimum 70 Inventory Slots. Those who pay upfront will also be granted "Paradise Patron" status for 30 days. There are a number of perks: Boosts to skill, XP, scrip, salvage, and reputation gain rates that stack with the matching boosts available in the store. 10% store-wide discount - boosts, costumes, lock boxes, all of it! A grab bag of one-hour boosts or Arkforge from Daily and Weekly Ark Hunter Bonus Lock Boxes. (Playing on console? Be sure to link your account to get this bonus!) Existing Defiance box or digital copy owners should get access to all of this too. We weren't terribly impressed by Defiance when we first laid eyes on it, but the game has apparently been expanded and upgraded since release. "A slightly broken game built on solid enough MMO foundation," was reviewer Craig Owens's verdict. If you're playing it right now, feel free to chime in with thoughts. The developer has suggested that it could come to Xbox One, too - given Microsoft's current interest in free-to-play, this would seem a bit of a no-brainer.
