DOOM’s latest patch brings the version number to 6.66, which is the number of the beast. To signify this version Bethesda has reset all multiplayer progression to zero, announced a free weekend for folks who’ve yet to dive in, and also announced that all multiplayer DLC will be free, forever. Better the devil you know, eh?

Bethesda has decided to bin the season pass for Doom, and is now giving away all the multiplayer DLC for free. Doom game director Marty Stratton detailed what was included on the Bethesda blog, writing ‘That’s three multiplayer DLC packs, which include nine of our best maps, three additional guns, three additional playable demons, new equipment, armor sets and more’.

The multiplayer progression system has been overhauled, so instead of the previous random unlocks, players can now work towards specific items by completing set in-game challenges. The hack module system has also been binned, and replaced with an all new runes system. ‘Unlike the previous Hack Modules, Runes do not need to be activated and do not expire. Runes are persistent capabilities (or perks) that become a consistent and predictable component of your loadout and play style,’ Stratton explained. That’s a much better system, to be fair.

Bethesda is hosting a free weekend for Doom, beginning July 20-23 on Xbox One and PC and coming to the PS4 on July 27-30. This will include the first two campaign levels, all multiplayer content and SnapMap (a simple yet powerful level-editor). If you like it and buy the game digitally, all your progress carries over.

Doom is out now on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
