Xbox One and PS4 Install Base Not Big Enough for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel

Randy Pitchford has said that Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel isn’t coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 because the install base isn’t yet big enough.

Speaking during a presentation given to press recently, the Gearbox Software president said that fan response to Borderlands 2 has been “unfathomable,” but despite extensive support in the form of downloadable add-ons, demand still hasn’t been met.

“We’ve probably created more DLC for Borderlands 2 than anything we’ve ever done before,” he said. “I can’t think of any other game in the industry that has had as much additional content added post-launch, than we’ve added to Borderlands 2. That said, we still haven’t met the demand.”

Pitchford continued, “If you imagine where that demand lives, it lives on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows PC. We don’t know to what extent demand will live on next-gen. I imagine over time, maybe by the time we get to third or fourth Christmas there’ll be a big enough install base [on next-gen].

“Between PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 there’s over 150 million installed units worldwide. 170 is more realistic. There’s fewer Xbox Ones and PlayStation 4s than we sold copies of Borderlands 2. That’s not part of the logic, but because Borderlands 2 did so well there’s obvious demand there.

“And we have not been able to serve it, with just DLC, and we’ve consumed all the memory there is to consume to add more content to Borderlands 2.”

“If you try to imagine the set of Borderlands players that have already upgraded [to a new console], that’s not 100 per cent. But if you try to imagine the set of Xbox One and PlayStation 4 owners that do not have an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, the difference there is so close to nil you can’t make a business rationalisation around that.”

“We want to entertain as many people as possible.”

Responding to a question about why Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel isn’t coming launching as a cross-gen release, Pitchford added, “It’s not free to build a game for next-gen, right? So when you’re deciding on where to spend your resources, we want to focus all of the attention we can on the game itself."

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is set for a “Fall 2014” release.
