EA and DICE have revealed yet another action-packed mode for Star Wars: Battlefront today, in the shape of Drop Zone, the game's answer to King of the Hill. The objective? To secure drop pods breaking through the atmosphere and landing on the planet surface in 8v8 battles.
Rebel and Empire teams will duke it out to capture and control the fallen drop pods, activating the claim process upon entering a pod's landing site. The winning team is the first to capture five pods or have control of the majority once the match's 10-minute time limit has expired.
Should a fight to claim a pod reach a stalemate, another will fall from the sky to break it, giving the teams two pods to seize control of. Pods also contain Power Pickups that can be collected once the pod is claimed and takes a moment to open. Clustering around a pod is inadvisable, however, as a well-placed explosive or Orbital Strike could decimate your squad in one fell swoop.
"This goes hand in hand with our design philosophy behind many of the game modes in Star Wars Battlefront," says Lead Level Designer Dennis Brännvall. “We’re promoting the idea of a fast, action-packed game where you need to be mobile and think on your feet. Camping doesn't really pay off.”
And when a pod has been opened and the Power Pickup has been nabbed, another pod will drop to take its place. You'll be able to play Drop Zone alongside Walker Assault and Survivor Mission mode in the beta this October. Star Wars: Battlefront is out on 17th November.
