The NES Remix series needed the greater "machine power" Wii U offered over 3DS, according to its director.

Series director Koichi Hayashida told IGN that the simplest reason for NES Remix's Wii U exclusivity is that he was already working on Super Mario 3D World, so he was familiar with the system.

"But, if you step into the shadows a bit more, in order to accomplish what we wanted with NES Remix, and get the effect we wanted out of it and the value that we wanted it to have, we needed some more machine power," Hayashida noted.

NES Remix emulates brief sections of a range of classic NES games. Some of its challenges break out tasks straight from the originals, like climbing to the top of the level in Donkey Kong.

Others apply new effects and mechanics, like darkening much of the screen, adding vibrant color and sound effects, or putting characters from one game into another.

3DS hosts a suite of NES Virtual Console games, but Hayashida said bringing the overall NES Remix experience to the portable console would have been difficult.

"I think the Wii U offered that up for us pretty easily, and it just would have been more difficult to do it for the 3DS. I think that's really the answer," he explained. "It's just that the Wii U had the machine power we were looking for in order for us to build the software we envisioned from the get go."

NES Remix 2 will release on April 25.
