Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain's multiplayer component, Metal Gear Online, has begun rolling out for the game today, alongside a rather odd new microtransaction option. To access Metal Gear Online, there's a new 960MB update you'll need to download, which also adds the ability to purchase an optional 'FOB insurance service' with real money that offers compensation for any staff or resources lost during FOB infiltrations.
"Until now, only the FOBs of rival players could be infiltrated, but following this update you will have access to special 'Event FOBs' prepared by the game developers," the official description reads. "In 'Event FOB' missions, there is no risk of retaliation (no defending player will invade your base later as revenge), so you can steal materials and abduct staff without fear of repercussions."
Anyone who successfully infiltrates your FOB will still receive staff and resources, but with FOB insurance you'll be given replacements. Mother Base Coins (MB Coins) can also now be used to speed up the construction of platforms for your FOB, as well as the length of time its takes units to complete Combat Deployment missions.
Metal Gear Online's servers are continuing to go live today for console players (it's coming to PC in January 2016), so if it's not available for you yet, don't worry. It's coming. You should be able to fiddle around in Freeplay Mode where you can experiment with weapons, items and such.
