    Shots were fired near US Vice-President Joe Biden's house in the state of Delaware, but he was away at the time, a Secret Service official has said.

    "A vehicle drove by the vice-president's residence at a high rate of speed and fired multiple gun shots," the official, Robert Hoback, told CNN.

    They were fired from a public road in Greenville at about 20:25 local time (01:25 GMT) outside an established security perimeter, he said.

    The incident is under investigation.
