It may seem like the eighth generation of consoles has only recently hit shelves, but there are already rumors of a redesign for Sony’s PlayStation 4. Images have hit the internet that would seem to present early designs for a slimmer, sleeker version of the recently released console — but can they be taken at face value?Sony is certainly no stranger to offering a refreshed, redesigned version of one of their consoles. Following on from the rounded edges of the PSOne and the wafer-thin re-release of the PlayStation 2, the PlayStation 3 received two major hardware revisions. All signs would point to the PS4 getting the same treatment at some point down the line, but it does seem a little too early for such plans to be unveiled now. However, that doesn’t mean that speculation regarding such a redesign should have to wait — rumors of a revised PS4 began circulating only months after the initial release of the console. VG247 has sourced images that would seem to demonstrate that plans for a ‘slim’ version of the PlayStation 4 are more advanced than expected, with designs already being drawn up. The project — codenamed ‘Monolith’ — presents a significantly smaller version of the console than its first release, However, there are some suspicious details to the leaked images. First and foremost, they’re off-screen photographs — which regularly seems to be the case whenplausible but unconfirmed news is being reported. Furthermore, the sheer amount of times that the word ‘confidential’ appears in the snaps is enough to provoke skepticism. There will eventually be a new version of PlayStation 4 hardware but it is a little soon for it to be so far into the design process, but in an industry when annualized sequels are fast becoming the norm, timelines are being accelerated all the time.
