You have to have the game in order to play trainers. If the game is saved on xexmenu, then you do not need the disc. You also do not need to install the game on xexmenu, as long as if you do have the disc. You can make your game folder, save the trainer in there, then run it. After that you can just play with the disc. To answer your question, yes you do need the game.
