just swapped a slim unlocked drive for a coolrunner rev c and a j/r programmer v2 this is gonna be my first try at this ill upload pics and try to keep you all updated and give you a shout if i run into any errors at all i was gonna get member big wayne to do this for me but it seemed like a great swap and would like to master this as im bored of just flashin them now WISH ME LUCK .. hh: banned slim gears console by the way .
not good mate to be honest my soldering irons getting way too hot and i cant reduce the temp i think im gonna send it to a pro on here before i do any damage i could do it if i had a decent iron this one constantlty pumps out 30watts .
Pick something like this up mate http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/60-Watt-soldering-station-temp-controlled-solder-iron-ESD-safe-UK-Co-/221218856701?pt=UK_Home_Garden_PowerTools_SM&hash=item3381abdefd#ht_3349wt_904 Make sure you get some flux too, it'll make things much easier I'm gonna start practicing RGH soon!
cheers for that mate i would buy it all if the bank balance allowed but for fear of damaging it im gonna send it to bigwayne maybe id go on further with it if it was an old phat but without a good iron im gonna leave it be .
update again as reported in other posts this was a MASSIVE FAIL due to me soldering the qsbs in which i later read are not really needed i have given up on this slim for now . i have a phat on an older dash that i am going to attempt to jtag i have spent most of the day reading and watching videos on the procces and have learnt quite alot amazes me why i even attemted to do the slim without reading loads and taking it all in first place the jtag procedure is something i know i will be 100% succesfull with when i get my new soldering iron and some flux etc , i will not give up on this until i am fully familiar with the procces enough and succesfull so i can then apply for the jtag/rgh pro badge .
To be honest. Doesn't matter which type of iron you get. I use all sort of temperatures. It's not about having a decent iron. It's about knowing how to use it and how to have technique. If you can show me some pictures of what you have done so far. I can finish the rest for you and have it shipped back next day.
thanks for the offer mate but this is something ive gotta learn to do myself it was my first rgh and i assumed i had to use the qsbs but when i read up more its easier to not use them and just solder th j/r programmer straight to the board gonna get some flux tommorow to make the procces easier .
Not a problem dude. Use a generous amount of flux and remember..don't leave the iron on the points too long. Just do it in short burst. Always tin the iron with a little solder and pre-tin the points on the motherboard. And also don't forget to clean the iron tip. I use a combination of Sponge and Brass Shavings to do this. If you need a hand. Don't hesitate to contact me.
