Online you will need a flashed DVD drive and need to burn your games to disc unless you get a special tool for that (not easy to set up), you can get a "Jtag/RGH" that will allow you to play games offline from HDD but not online.

Or you can get an xk3y, That allows you to play games from a HDD online and it's not even hard to install.
you can buy an xk3y or wassabi that will allow you to play games off of a hdd but no dlc/xbla games for free and none of the jtag only mods.
they will only run xbla youv bought legit but youl be able to burn and play any game that has a dvd copy there the best way for online the disks are cheap to id grab a flashed xbox m8 i thought about a wassabi before but there unsafe my flashed xbox has been going online since mw2 and ive THE SITE THAT CANNOT BE MENTIONED FOR LEGAL REASONS hundreds of games now
You should get a Jtag or RGH and keep a retail for your online gaming. My personal opinion is RGH is better cause I had mine for a while and not one single problem. And if you plan on getting one make sure you do some research before purchasing so you don't get ripped off. The world is at your finger tips.
