Xbox Live Indie Games is coming to an end Microsoft has announced. As of yesterday (9th September), sign ups for the service are no longer being accepted as Microsoft sets about beginning the "sunsetting process" on the Xbox 360 self-publishing initiative.
The fact that Xbox Live Indie Games never made the jump to Xbox One was a clue that the program had run its course. Anyone already part of the XBLIG program will have a year to finish any projects that they're currently working on, and then in September 2017, the Xbox Live Indie Games Marketplace will be shutdown permanently. The XNA developer website will also be closed.
However, any indie games you've purchased will still be available to download and play, while all creators with a valid subscription will receive a free lifetime Windows Developer account worth $99. "Over the next two years we'll be working with game conservationists and creators to preserve the legacy of XBLIG content", said Chris Charla, head of the new indie-championing ID@Xbox program.
"We’ve known the end was coming for a while, and thankfully two years notice is plenty of time for those still in progress" said XNA and XBLIG developer Andy Dunn of ZBuffer. "Many of the XNA people have moved onto Unity, Unreal and other gaming tools. The XNA style of programming lives on cross platform with MonoGame for those who wish to continue, and the knowledge we all got is still a valuable skill."
