I have an old Halo 3 xbox 360. A while back, it started freezing after 5 mins or so of running. When it happens the image just stays on the TV. The guide button doesn't work and I have to unplug it to turn it off. What is causing this and what can I do to fix it?
Mine was doing the same thing I just took it apart and cleaned it. Still does it every once in awhile but for the most part runs fine.
one option is it just needs a good Xclamp fix with some quality thermal paste (arctic silver 5) I would try this before spending money on reflow or reball services also if this is not a Jag console running high fan speed already , you could do a fan mod to keep it a bit cooler to help it out down the road after the fix
its obviously overheating issue, because motherboard turn them selves off automatically before they ruin them selves, but yours is stuck at the screen, i would say go get an rrod kit online, and do what is needed, to prevent an even worse situation like rrod.
Some people say so, but I don't believe they do, just we have no Idea how hot regular retail consoles run , because there's no temp gauges etc on a Jtag-RGH you have the ability to control fan speed and view temps at any time you want to check them
If you're going to take it apart and clean all dust from it like J4Y said, don't use a rag or a cloth, invest $5 and go get a can of compressed air. It'll really help your situation.
deff the heat... can cause the gpu to overheat and freeze. can o air and listen for the fan.... might be the fan.
Thanks for all of the great ideas guys. I have a can of compressed air at home. Can anyone sell me an unlock tool for cheap? I don't want to break my case, as it is a limited edition.
m8 you dont need an unlock tool i never use one take top and bottom grills of 360 take of faceplate undo front clips with fingernails once all open hold 360 beetween knees and pull it apart works flawless for me everytime and you cant even tell its been opened trust me try it .
