If the Xbox 360 console software does not update successfully, you might receive one of the following error messages:

    • Can't download the update. To test your connection, open System Settings and select Network Settings, Test Xbox LIVE Connection.
    • Can't install the update. The disc is unreadable.
    • Can't read the update from the disc. Please reinsert the disc to continue the update.
If you receive one of these errors, try the following solutions:

Show all 1: Try installing the update again
    1. Restart your console.
    2. Go to My Xbox, and then select System Settings.
    3. Select Network Settings.
    4. Select Test Xbox LIVE Connection.
    5. Select Yes if you are prompted to update your console software.
If this does not fix the problem, try the next solution.

2: Make sure that you have enough storage space The latest console software update requires at least 190 megabytes (MB) of storage space (or 256 MB if you live in Japan). If you do not have enough free space, you need to move or delete some items. See Copy, move, or delete content.

If this does not fix the problem, try the next solution.

3: Clear the Xbox 360 console cache Removing the temporary files on your Xbox 360 console might solve the problem. See Clearing your system cache.

After clearing the cache, try the update again. If this does not fix the problem, try the next solution.

4: Reinsert the storage device If you still have problems installing the update and are using an Xbox 360 Memory Unit or a USB flash drive instead of a hard drive, try removing and reinserting the memory unit or USB flash drive. If you have a hard drive, try removing and adding the hard drive again.

After replacing the storage device, try the update again. If this does not fix the problem, try the next solution.

5: Copy the update to a USB flash drive, or burn a CD/DVD If these steps do not resolve the problem, copy the console update from your computer to a USB flash drive or CD/DVD, and then install the update on your console. Here’s how:

Copy to a USB flash drive

Note The USB flash drive must use the FAT32 file system.
    1. Plug your USB flash drive into a USB port on your computer.
    2. Download the update file.
    3. Click Save to save the console update .zip file on your computer.
    4. Unzip the file:
      • If you are using Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7, double-click the .zip file to unzip it.
      • If you are using an earlier version of Microsoft Windows, you need to use a special software program to unzip the file (for example, WinZip).
    5. Copy the contents of the .zip file to the root directory of your USB flash drive.
    6. Unplug the USB flash drive from your computer.
    7. Plug the USB flash drive into a USB port on your Xbox 360 console.
    8. Restart the console.
    9. When the console restarts, the installation program starts automatically. Select Yes when you are prompted to update the new console software.
    Burn to CD or DVD

You can update your Xbox 360 console software by downloading the update to your computer from Xbox.com or burning the update to a CD or DVD, and then installing the update on your console. Here's how:

    1. On your computer, download the update file.
    2. Click Save to save the console update .zip file on your computer.
    3. Unzip the file:
      • If you are using Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7, double-click the .zip file to unzip it.
      • If you are using an earlier version of Microsoft Windows, you need to use a special software program to unzip the file (for example, WinZip).
    4. Insert a blank, writeable CD or DVD into your computer.
    5. Copy the contents of the .zip file to the root directory on your CD or DVD, and choose to write (burn) the files to the disc.
    6. Once the files have been burned to disc, remove that disc from your computer and insert it into the disc drive on your Xbox 360 console.
    7. Restart the console.
    8. When the console restarts, the installation program starts automatically. Select Yes when you are prompted to update the new console software.
