Setting up a static IP can be difficult sometimes, but your ISP is the best resource to help you out with that.

As a side note, a static IP never changes, so if some guy on xbox or something get's a hold of it, he can boot you off, and keep you off for as long as he can maintain it. Normally having an IP that changes protects against this, but static isn't really the best route in my opinion :(

That would make sense, he'd need a small load balancer and ddos protection in that case because trolls are ruthless lol

hmm with a dns no its a all in one and a service paid server all he would need is a static ip ^_^ but if its a self server yes that is true

Yea if he wants his personal IP to be static he'd need that, but paying for server space would probably be a less-complicated route lol

Most routers should have a setup in the settings that let you opt for static ip or even a setting for just one deadicated to whatever you need it for

I would be overall impressed if someone who lives close enough to you knows how to grab your IP and manage it for there own. Let's say you went to a static IP, you most likely have a protected modem/router combo your ISP gave you, unless he has the tools and the brain, and most importantly the processing power to crack a password, then I would say kudos to him to begin with. I wouldn't be concerned about anyone attacking you directly from your apartment, if you plan to host a server off your PC for a couple of friends, you should be fine.

DDoS shouldn't be a big worry to you, most of the time if you live in a city, an ISP controls the majority of the Internet there, if they see a type of malicious attack such as DDoS coming from one of there very own IP's to another of there very own IP's they won't hesitate to shut it down. Most users won't target you either, unless you're just growing and your server is becoming better than the one they may operate, if that's the case, just buy DDoS protected VPS, it will be cheaper than having to buy the necessary hardware to protect DDoS attacks.
