Nintendo Wii U and 3DS are not doing as well as PlayStation and Xbox in the console market which is why it is initially thought that the upcoming Nintendo NX is going to be the replacement to 3DS and Wii U. However it is believed that the upcoming Nintendo NX will be a handheld console like 3DS.
Previously Satoru Iwata said that there'll be no 'Nintendo NX' information coming out this year, he added, "We do not plan on talking specifics about the the NX until 2016." He also assured fans that its partnership with DeNA doesn't necessarily mean that they're abandoning 'home gaming' systems. Iwata further added, "Presently, we cannot talk about the time period when it [the NX] will go on sale or what it's like. Because we are calling it a 'new concept,' we are not thinking of this as a 'simple replacement' for the 3DS or the Wii U." English translation courtesy of Kotaku.
Since Iwata said that this won't be a 'simple' replacement for Wii or the 3DS, it seems like Nintendo is still working on the console's concept. Most likely we won't be seeing the console until 2017.
Since this upcoming 'Nintendo NX' is meant to get Nintendo back to its glory days fans has been expressing their wishlist for the upcoming gaming console. Most fans are wishing that the Nintendo NX will be a combination of their 'new console' married to their 'new handheld'. I think that would be awesome too.
Many have high expectations for the upcoming 'Nintendo NX' most especially when Iwata has announced it "As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business. Let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand new concept under the development codename 'NX'."
