Microsoft is working on a solution to allow third-party peripheral compatibility with the Xbox One, according to a company rep.

In a statement supplied to Polygon, a Microsoft Australia spokesperson explained why current peripherals won't work with the Xbox One out of the box.

"The Wireless Controller has been redesigned to allow for higher data transfer speed between the controller and the console," said the rep. "This also required creating a new expansion port design for headsets and future controller add-on devices which is different from a standard audio plug input.

"Xbox plans to develop solutions in the near future to allow consumers to connect many brands of wired gaming headsets to the Wireless Controller for gaming and chat audio."

Microsoft's Xbox Support Twitter account has previously suggested the fix is likely to be an adapter.

Microsoft has said that the Kinect sensor bundled with every Xbox One console is intended to provide out-of-the-box in-game chat capabilities in place of a headset, which will not be included.

A headset will be made available seperately, in addition to a Play and Charge Kit.

According to the platform holder the redesigned Xbox One headset offers "crystal-clear digital wideband audio", and features new controls that let you adjust volume and mute without having to take your hands off the controller.
