Microsoft has applied for a patent which will allow it to use an Achievement-like system for watching television shows. Achievement Unlocked: Hummed your way through the entire Game of Thrones opening credits! The patent application, spotted by GamesIndustry International, was filed back in November and reads: ”Television viewing tends to be a passive experience for a viewer, without many opportunities for the viewer to engage or have interactive experiences with the presented content. “To increase interactive viewing and encourage a user to watch one or more particular items of video content, awards and achievements may be tied to those items of video content.” Two examples of potential achievements were given, watching a single event like the Super Bowl or watching an entire television series. Of course the major driver behind this patent is earning lots of money from advertising opportunities. “Additionally, by tying the awards and achievements to particular items of video or advertising content, viewers may be encouraged to increase their viewership of the content, thus increasing advertising opportunities,” the application reads. Microsoft also adds that the Kinect could be used to unlock achievements while watching. Users could be asked to perform a certain gesture while watching a show or hold up a product. The patent also details several other rewards for completing achievements such as Avatar gear, virtual in-game currency, and physical items. source: EGM
