It's been a historical day for Apple, as the technology giant gathered journalists at its headquarters in Cupertino for a product announcement that could make or break Apple's success. For the first time ever, Apple have announced 2 phones at the same time!

Firstly, let me introduce you to the iPhone 5S. The iPhone 5S will house the first ever A7 64-bit smartphone chip which, according to Phil Schiller, has "increased 56x since the first iPhone, half of that coming today with the iPhone 5S." To put this into perspective, the iPhone 5S will be 31 percent faster than the iPhone 5. An unlocked and contract free iPhone 5S will cost $649 for a 16GB model, $749 for a 32Gb model and $849 for a 64GB model.

As you can see from the images above, the iPhone 5S will come in the traditional black, but not so traditional silver and gold. The smartphone will ship with a fingerprint sensor that allows users to unlock their phone via their finger (Touch ID). Not only will the biometric system add ease to using and unlocking the iPhone, but the system will also take phone security to the next level. Touch ID adds extra security to your app purchases as you, and only you, have the ability to approve purchases from the iTunes store using nothing more than your finger.

As seen on Apple's website: "Put your finger on the Home button, and just like that your iPhone unlocks. It’s a convenient and highly secure way to access your phone. Your fingerprint can also approve purchases from iTunes Store, the App Store, and the iBooks Store, so you don’t have to enter your password. And Touch ID is capable of 360-degree readability. Which means no matter what its orientation — portrait, landscape, or anything in between — your iPhone reads your fingerprint and knows who you are. And because Touch ID lets you enroll multiple fingerprints, it knows the people you trust, too."

The Touch ID sensor is built into the home button, which is now made of laser-cut sapphire crystal. Everytime you use Touch ID, it gets better at reading your prints. All prints are encrypted and locked in the A7 chip. The prints are never directly accessible by software, and are not stored on any of Apple's server. This information should allay any fears for those who were concerned about the security of such personal information.

Battery life is always a key issue when it comes to purchasing iDevices. However, the iPhone 5S doesn't disappoint with the battery lasting 10 hours of constant Wi-Fi browsing and 250 hours on standby.

“But that’s not all," said Phil Schiller, "we have a new chip called the M7 that works along with the A7." The M7 chip is a 'motion processor' that continuously measures motion data, accelerometer and gestural data. It's thought that this feature will open a "whole new generation of health and fitness applications." Apple has been working in partnership with Nike to test this feature, designing and producing an app that counts your stride and movements throughout the day.
The final point I'd like to cover with the iPhone 5S is the camera. Customers love taking photos with the iPhone, so Apple responded by making some huge improvements. The sensor itself has a 15% larger area, an f2.2 aperture and 1.5-micron pixels. Furthermore, before you even take a picture, the phone's setting light balance and exposure, creating a dynamic local tone map around the image and doing an autofocus matrix metering with 15 focus zones. The iPhone 5S also had 2 LEDs. One of these LEDs is white, and the other is amber. The camera will analyse the lighting in the room and adjust the colour of the flash accordingly to try and achieve the best quality photograph. For the first time, Apple has included a slow-motion option when capturing video. The slow-mo feature captures footage in 720p at 120frames per second.

"There’s also a fun new burst mode. If you hold your finger on the shutter, it can take up to 10 frames per second. Using the A7 chip, the phone analyses all of the burst shots and presents which one it thinks will be your pick for best shot".

Now it's time to move onto the iPhone 5C. The iPhone 5C, which stands for 'Colour' - not 'Cheap' - will be available in blue, white, red, yellow and green. The device will cost $99 for a 16GB model and $199 for a 32GB model; both on a 2-year contract. Alternatively, you can purchase it unlocked and contract free at $549 for a 16Gb model and $649 for a 32GB model.

The iPhone 5C is made from a single sheet of polycarbonate, as explained by Phil Schiller "The entire back and sides are made from a single part, its front one glass, multi-touch surface. As close as you look, you wont see joints or seams," The device has a 4-inch retina screen, a higher capacity battery than the iPhone 5, an A6 chip and an 8-megapixel camera that's capable of doing HD video. The smartphone will run iOS 7 and ship with Bluetooth 4.0.

Pre-orders for the iPhone 5C start on the 13th of September and both devices go on sale 20th of September. Both smartphones will be available for purchase in the US, UK and several other countries including China. iOS 7 will be available on the 18th of September for absolutely free! The mobile operating system will be downloadable on all iPhone 4's and later, all iPad 2's and later and the iPod Touch 5. Read more about iOS 7 - here.

That's all folks! I hope I've covered any questions you have about the devices. If you have any questions that I've not answered, feel free to tag me in the comments below. As always, feel free to leave any thoughts or opinions on the devices below, especially if you're thinking of buying / upgrading your current phone.
