The latest Destiny patch has reduced the effectiveness of the Three of Coins consumable, in an attempt to slow down the Exotic gold rush it caused last week.

A new item sold by Xur, the Three of Coins increases the chance of an Exotic engram dropping following Major and Ultra Kills (enemies with a yellow bar and a proper name). But when it first appeared last week, it was a little too potent.

I exploited it myself, if “exploit” is the right word. Instead of running a Strike playlist and popping a Three of Coins before each boss kill, I did it in a story mission instead, deliberately killing myself and the relatively weak boss at the same time, allowing me to repeat the process over and over again, with the minimum of fuss.

Within a couple of hours, I had earned seven Exotic engrams. And I wasn’t the only one, everyone was at it. It was dirty, but it felt kinda good?

The latest patch for the game, released last night, will prevent that from happening again. The effectiveness of the consumable been reduced when used in “rapid succession”, so nobody will want to spam a story boss again.

Interestingly, however, when there’s more time between kills (when you run Strikes, basically) the Three of Coins will “remain as effective as before”. So while the return rate from Three of Coins may be the same this weekend, it’s gonna take a lot more effort to reproduce.

This is a good thing. While it’s nice to quickly earn a boatload of Exotics, the method was cheap. Exotics should be a cherished prize, rather than the result of a swift and cheesy grind.

The Black Spindle earned via the Heroic Daily on Wednesday is a brilliant example. A secret discovered by the community, containing a tough little timed challenge - that’s the kind of thing that Destiny needs to do more often. Earning that particular Exotic felt fantastic.

You can read more about last night’s Hot Fix in Bungie’s Weekly Update, where you’ll also find confirmation of the Moments of Triumph fix and some chatter about the new Crucible mode, Zone Control.
