Far Cry 5 just dropped today on Xbox One, PS4, and PC, and the reviews are in.

Your opinion on the success of Far Cry 5 will depend on what you look for in a Far Cry game, and how much you value those certain aspects of the game, even if other aspects are severely lacking.

Are you into sandbox craziness? Exciting gunplay? Megalomaniac warlords? Compelling narrative? -- you'll definitely get all of that in this newest Far Cry release, but in bits and pieces...and some pieces will be not as good as others...and the puzzle might not fit together as a whole...

Far Cry 5 is “never bad”, and is at times “excellent” and the “world is meticulously constructed”, but as a whole is might be a “beautiful but bland recitation of what's come before, from both the series and Ubisoft's open-world playbook”.

BUT this could be EXACTLY what you’re looking for...

Gamespot - “If you're familiar with the premise of Far Cry...then you know exactly what Far Cry 5 feels like.”

    The good:
“Far Cry 5 boasts a wonderfully harmonious flow to its adventure, with its smart changes to exploration, discovery, and progression distinctly bolstering the enjoyment of creatively engaging and experimenting with its spectacular open world.”

    The bad:
"...Some brief irritations and missed opportunities with its narrative."

    Final Score: 9/10

Kotaku - “The bulk of Far Cry 5 feels like a gonzo camping trip.”

    The good:
"Far Cry games are laboratories for experimenting, giving you the freedom to do stuff ordinary games won’t….They usually have better shooting than most open world games, and better open worlds than most shooters. Far Cry 5 nails that part of the series’ legacy."

    The bad:
"For all its nods to contemporary politics and societal strife, Far Cry 5 is just another fun permutation of the usual Far Cry formula with nothing very interesting to say."

Polygon - "A horrible story ruins an enjoyable world..."

    The good:
"A very enjoyable game with an immense number of things to do, a beautifully recreated portion of the United States, and a collection of missions with wildly varying tones and structure."

    The bad:
"It’s a finely tuned open-world game stapled onto a story that’s insultingly bad."

Final Score: 6.5 (across all platforms)

Eurogamer - “The first instalment to be set in North America, Far Cry 5 is Far Cry at its least engrossing, clumsiest and most basic, though there's still just enough going on here to keep a returning fan involved.”

    The good:
"...Between the hostage trucks, convoys, roadblocks, sniper's nests, air patrols, wildlife, plentiful explosives and cartoon physics, you'll seldom want for distraction (or incineration) on the road to the next story objective."

    The bad:
"It is a moribund apparatus of conquest that is unable to tell any story other than the rise to power of a well-armed outsider over a lushly imagined, exoticised realm, however urgently it might try."

    Metacritic scores (as of posting):
    PS4: 81
    Xbox One: 84
    PC: 75

So what do you think? Are any of you planning on picking this game up. Any fans of previous Far Cry games?

If there's one think I think we can all agree on, it's that it's a good thing your dog companion can't die... oh and that he's revived by petting him!
