Look at their previous topics/posts to get an idea if they are trustworthy or not. Check if they've had bumpy transactions in the past. See how active they are on the site. Are they here everyday or just pop in on occasion. If you have doubt in the person or if they're new, check up on them. Look around on other sites to see if they're there selling as well & what feedback they have. Check if they've been banned on other sites for scamming. Always ask for proof. A picture of the item including their screen name is a good way to prove they actually have the item they're selling. I would always suggest using PayPal as your first choice to make a payment. A lot of times a seller will ask for you to make a payment as a Gift(Friends & Family). The reason behind this is so the seller doesn't have to pay fees and is less likely to become a victim of a false claimback. It's recommend only paying as Good & Services(unless you are fully confidante with the sellers legitimacy). It is also a good idea to have a verified PayPal account linked to you're bank. This give you an added protection if you do get scammed. Even if PayPal doesn't side with you during a claim, you're bank most likely will. Only make a payment to a verified PayPal account. Also take note of how long they've had the account. To check if someones account is verified use this method. Paste: https://www.paypal.com/verified/pal= THEIRACCOUNTGOESHERE into your browser. It will require you to be signed into PayPal. You will see a page like this. Always keep any/all conversation on the site. Do this either on the thread of the seller or in a PM. Do not take the conversation off-site(Skype, AIM or any other method) Always keep record of the transaction from the first point of contact until the sale is complete and you have the item in your possession. Best way to do this is screen shots along with keeping the emails you should get during the PM. This record keeping will come in very handy if any problems come up during the transaction. These are just tips to keep you safe. They are not sure fire ways to avoid a scam although will cut back on the chance of it. If anyone has other helpful info to add, please do.
