Make sure your not trying to play a XDG3 backup, they won't work.

Hitachi 32, 36,40, 46, 47,58, and 59. GDR-3120L LT+ v2.0. This version adds support for XGD3 backups, and includes the LT-MAX feature which supports full XGD3 ISOs burned on regular DVD+R DL media with iXtreme Burner MAX. NOTE: Hitachi v2.0+ does not support truncated XGD3 burns.

I had an old Hitachi 59DJ before upgrading to an elite, and had the same unrecognized disc error when trying to play
truncated XGD3 burns before I purchased an iHAS.

I get unreconigsed disc all the time. From my personal experience with going through many hitach drives. I know they are super picky drives when it comes to media compare other drives. I used TKD media and always and I mean always I have to keep finding that sweet spot until the laser detects it. I had better chance getting it to recognized without fiddling around with it much with good medias like Verbatims(MIS).

One thing I have to say is that truncanted disc just doesn't work with LT2.0 hitachi drives(for me anyway, and I have 2), you need a iHas burner flashed with the appropriate fimware.
