Hereâ€™s a few Thief beginner tips on PS4 to guide you through your first few hours as a tea-leaf. Thereâ€™s a range of general thieving help, combat pointers and some other crucial tricks youâ€™ll want to know before you start picking your first pocket or two.

Never underestimate the Swoop

The Swoop is a very overpowered move which is easy to abuse. Tap or hold X to execute a swift dash of different lengths thatâ€™s fast and silent providing you donâ€™t shoot over broken glass or past a bird. As long as you donâ€™t actually tread on a guardâ€™s toes or pass in front of their face you can practically swoop inches from them without getting caught.

Get the wrench and wire cutter as soon as

These are classed as upgrades but are so essential you should make a point of getting them as soon as you possibly can. The wrench gives you access to vents and alternate routes (as well as letting you steal the collectable city plaques) while the wire cutters let you disarm traps protecting doors and chests. The razorâ€™s also a good call as you canâ€™t get the painting collectables until you have it.

Beware the birds and the.. dogs

Youâ€™ll get a tutorial about birds right at the start of the game. Theyâ€™re used as alarms, making a fuss if you move too fast near them. Sounds easy enough to remember but the cages can be hard to see in the gloom sometimes, and it only takes a moments broken concentration to swoop past one and set it squawking. Dogs on the over hand simply know youâ€™re there and will be alerted via proximity. Best avoid them all together or, if youâ€™re feeling heartless, shoot them from a distance.

Collect every document, and listen

Itâ€™s not actually that hard to hear incidental conversation as the game seems to broadcast it directly into Garrattâ€™s brain. It can be a useful source of info though, occasionally letting you in on loot locations or security plans. Also collect and check all the documents you can pick up for similar info and, crucially, safe combinations. The latter are usually always left nearby.

Tap focus

Early doors, before upgrades, focus can be depleted fast. Get into the habit of tapping it on and off with triangle. Loot and interactive items will glow briefly for a second afterwards and can actually stand out more clearly against the dark background outside of focus mode.

If caught, run

On the default difficulty level the AI really are as dumb as a bag of hammers. Most of the time you can lose a fully alerted group of guards by simply running away. Providing you donâ€™t run into another enemy youâ€™ll only need to clear a couple of corners before he decides youâ€™ve escaped. Be careful climbing as well as if they see you and you get trapped on a cupboard itâ€™s easy to be shot to death.

Donâ€™t be afraid of combat

One-on-one you can take on any guard with ease. Just use L1 and the left stick to dodge incoming attacks and fight back with R1 each time. Even without any upgrades you can take an enemy down with three or four hits. Just make sure you only fight one at a time. Once youâ€™re up against numbers itâ€™s much harder â€“ youâ€™ll have to dodge multiple blows and find it much hard to take people down permanently.

Look up

Much of a levelâ€™s loot can be hidden away, as are alternate routes and hidden rooms. Look up in the city hub for example and youâ€™ll find a few trap doors hidden in ceilings that arenâ€™t immediately obvious. The rope beams you need for your rope arrows can also be occasionally hidden or tucked out of sight, as are vents and other options.

Look down

Broken glass is your main threat and will alert guards and birds if you walk over it at full speed. At a slower pace itâ€™ll still make noise but is far less likely to set off an alarm. Surprisingly just as dangerous is paper which is much easier to miss in the murk but can make quite the racket if you blunder over it.

Shout, slap / throw to lure guards

As mentioned before the guards arenâ€™t the brightest bunch and are easy to manipulate. Throwing an object is an obvious way to send them in the wrong direction but you can only carry one throwable at a time. Instead you can use arrows at range, or your blackjack to hit nearby scenery to get their attention. You can even use yourself â€“ letting them see you just enough to investigate without being alerted â€“ or hook up the camera or mic and you can even shout.

Take care climbing

Using L2 to climb and freerun can be a little touchy at times. Whenever youâ€™re in a dangerous situation remember to squeeze the trigger rather than holding it to take things quietly, one at a time. Hold it down and you could slide over something, popping out of cover and giving yourself away.

Use the mini map

If you get lost or need to check your location donâ€™t forget you can tap down on the D-pad to turn an on-screen mini-map on or off and get your bearings.

Switch off the objective marker

If you want a more old school Thief experience and increase you chances of finding loot then switch off the objective marker in the city hub. Itâ€™ll encourage you to explore a bit more randomly, hopefully finding a few new locations or opportunities than you might with a direction constantly in the corner of your eye.
