So i went over my mothers today, and was told about her PS3 slim which she has never really used.. maybe once or twice in its 20month history,

Apparently my brother took it to replace his phat which YLOD a few days ago, and plugged it in turned it on and it powered up for about 5-10 seconds before shutting itself down..

Had a look at it, and yes after 5 secondsish the power completely dies, (have to re-plug it in for any power to get to it)

did the fan test thing, which only lasted a few seconds aswell before stopping (3-4seconds max)

im not sure if my brother first plugged his PHAT power cord into the slim ps3 or not,

would that of fried anything inside?

as far as I know phat cords can't plug into slims due to a different connector,,and It shouldn't matter either way with that as the power supply/transformer is inside the ps3 (unlike 360)

Did he take it apart at all? (seal broken)

can you get it to pop the recovery menu?,,or will it not stay powered up long enough for that?

I've not dealt with much of hardware failures on ps3,,,I think Splats is your man to talk with there

PS3 Recovery Menu

  • Place the PS3 in standby mode
  • Press and hold the power button for a couple of seconds, you should hear a beep
  • Keep a hold of the power button for a couple more seconds, the PS3 should shut back down to standby mode
  • Once this happens, press and hold the power button again for a couple of seconds, waiting for 1 single beep.
  • Ignore this beep and keep it pressed until you hear 2 consecutive beeps, release the button.

Yeah my best guess for that would be power supply related and it's about to puke entirely otherwise it would at least stay with the red light on until you pull the cord out of the back.

If you still have the warranty then use it since you havent broken the seal yet. If you dont have the warranty then open up the ps3 and see if the power supply is good. It should be putting off around 12v. If it is good then it can be a bunch of things from the thermal compound needs to be replaced or theres a bad solder connection on a chip. Not really to sure but hope this helped man!
