The last we heard about the Nintendo Wii U, Reggie Fils-Aime was showing the device off during an episode of Jimmy Fallon, but now we have a another talking point for you, and it involves a potential price for the system.

Nintendo has previously said that the price of the console will be competitive with the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 due to balancing factors, but a recent retailer listing by EB Games suggests that pricing for the Nintendo Wii U may be as premium as it gets.

According to their listing, you can now pre-order the Nintendo Wii U, at a rather expensive price of $598 AUS, as seen by VentureBeat. Although we should never base currency conversions as solid evidence for prices in other regions, $598 translates to $634 US, 440 Euros and £391 just for your reference.

At first glance, you may be thinking that this is price is exaggerated by the retailer, but if you remember back to the original launch price of the Sony PlayStation 3, consumers were looking at prices (60GB model) of £425, $599 and even as high as $999 in Australia all those years ago. With that in mind, that early $598 price isn’t actually too bad in comparison.

Of course, Nintendo has yet to have the final say on the official pricing for the console, and it will definitely be a long while until we find out since the console won’t be launching until deep into 2012. The question that most of you need to ask yourselves though, is do i really want to pay $634 for Nintendo’s ‘next generation‘ console?

The company has come under a bit of criticism after it’s initial unveiling at E3, in relation to the console’s graphics potential and also the fact that Nintendo seemingly misled gamers into believing that PS3 and Xbox 360 gameplay demos were a product of the Nintendo Wii U system.

It’s early days yet though, so we definitely shouldn’t jump to conclusions. The prospect of new Mario, Smash Bros, Zelda, Metroid and even big screen Pokemon titles are enough for fans to grab the new console the second it hits shops. Nintendo may not have the biggest hardcore gamer fan base, but when you are solely responsible for creating games which a lot of consumers grew up playing during their childhood, this becomes an advantage that Sony and Microsoft can’t compete with.

For example, if Nintendo were ever to remake Legend of Zelda: A link to the Past in HD at somepoint down the road, imagine how many gamers would drool at the prospect of revisiting one of the finest games in history and arguably the best SNES game period.

EB Games has given us an early indication on the price for the Nintendo Wii U console, so what are your thoughts on it? Would you have a problem paying that much for it in today’s society, or do you feel $600-650 US is around the area that you predicted in the first place. We’ll let you know when we see other retailers dropping bombs with their prices.

for the that price I would say its a bit much, you could get a top of the range pc card and have way better graphics.

The ps3 price was different as epople were after a blu-ray player that was top of the range at the time hence the higher price but ther wii u will have no video playback so that price is a little too much ...... the hardcore nintendo kids will be pimping them selves just to pay for it.

I don't see anybody paying that price. They will have to knock off a few hundred dollars for it to be appealing to the public eye.

I thought Nintendo always prided themselves on having the most affordable hardware. I can't see them selling this system for that much....

Any price higher than $299 USD spell 3DS disaster all over again for Nintendo. Pikmin 3 for $600 lol, “When the sun rises in the west, sets in the east. When the seas go dry, when the mountains blow in the wind like leaves.”

SMFH, I've been a loyal fan since the old N64 days but after they took upon themselves to attempt on rivaling next-gen(e.g. wii vs ps3/360), it just starting to ****** me off. The wii production costs is lesser than the MSRP price so in essence, they gain money per console sold than losing vs. 360/ps3. They thrive on tech innovations but it's nothing but damn gimmicks. The wii library never managed to catered the true gaming audience with their lack of 1st party titles. They followed on the whole 3d gimmick fiasco at that time when 3D tvs were new so they came out with the 3ds and this thing still gives me headaches to this day. Now, the wii-u, it's all over again. You know what I'm not buying the wii-u if anything Rainbow-u nintendo for not making a true successor to the gamecube that we all hope for. We don't need a stupid tablet like controller to play our games if anything it's asking for disaster and I know this controller won't be a cheap replacement by any means and nintendo knew this was is a well-thought out plan to suck money in big sum from us consumers. *sigh* just when I thought the 3DO was once a thing in the past, its coming back all over again.

Lol, Even though you already said this, judging the price based on the Australian pricing is a horrible idea. The aussies actually have everything overpriced compared to most of the world, they have to pay much more than we normally do.(seriously, go look at prices for Mac computers over there) I don't see the Wii U being more than $300 ~ 350.

As far as I know there isn't a set release date/price, there are a few shops that are setting their own listings though. I know there is a small game shop in my town that's listed a few games on pre-order that haven't even been announced yet and they have the Wii-U listed as well as £199. I'm pretty sure it's just a set price, although I'm not sure if they will give your cash back when it's properly announced. I'm certain there was a topic somewhere that said it would be closer to the £200 range as well?
