A few days ago I received my flashed phat drive (Phillips-Lite-on DG 16D2S) and was eager to test it out! I popped in multiple Xgd2 games and NONE of them read/played the first time successfully. The next day, I tried again, this time with an Xgd3 game. After a few attempts of getting the disc to read (ejecting the tray) the game read, played, and installed marvelously. After playing a few more games and coming across the same issue, I had come to the conclusion that my laser probably needed a replacement.... But at the time.. It didn't seem to be too much of a problem since games could still be read/installed. Now fast forward a day or two, these are the xgd3 games that were successfully played/installed without error. - Forza 4 (Installed and played) - Gta 5 (Played, *Not installed*) - Call of Duty Black Ops 2 (Installed and played) (Note that these games took 5 - sometimes 10 attempts of reading the disc to successfully be able to play/install) Now here's the issue. Yesterday I actually transferred data from 1 hard drive to another. At the end of the transfer I had to delete all the games that had been installed via disc. So when it came time to re-install the xgd3 games (xgd2 games played/installed perfectly btw), some games wouldn't install. Forza 4 for example. I also tried to install Gta 5 for the first time, that wouldn't install either. I actually verified the discs today using Nero DiscSpeed and these were the results: Forza 4 had Max: 128 PI Errors & Max: 89 PI Failures (I know, that's bad) Gta 5 had Max: Max: 79 PI & Max: 11 PI Failures (Good/Decent) It all boils down to... Why did Forza 4 install the first time then fail to install after I swapped hard drive with a horrible PIF rate, while Gta 5 doesn't install at all (with better PI/PIF results)? Just stops at 50% (Unreadable Disc Error). Now I think I know the answer (get a new laser) but I just want to be sure... Should I try re-burning Forza 4 and Gta 5 to see if they install? Should I try other Xgd3 games (I just tried Borderlands tpc, burned two discs, both had bad results in Nero DiscSpeed and came up with unreadable disc errors mid game), or should I just lay off XGD3 until i get a NEW FREAKING LASER. Edit: Original games WORK FINE Edit 2: I just reburned Forza 4 and the results in Nero DiscSpeed are only a little better. Still 70+ PI Failures. Does anyone know how to improve the results? I followed this Imgburn guide: http://www.se7ensins.com/forums/threads/tut-how-to-correctly-burn-xgd3-games.798973/ Edit 3: Just tried to Install the reburn of Forza 4. It had Lower PI Failures than the previously burned one but now instead of reaching 70% it only reaches 40! Why has the install become worse??? It seems like everytime I make a reburn of a game the reburn is WORSE in terms of being able to install the game successfully EVEN THOUGH the disc quality appears to be better in Nero DiscSpeed! It makes no sense! EDIT 4: I'm a bit late on this. But I'd like to mention that the problem has been SOLVED. A HUGE THANK YOU to all the people who posted on this thread. I couldn't have done it without your help.
My guess would be bad burn and/or disc type since originals work fine. Are you burning with Verbatims & using Imgburn to burn? If not then try that EDIT: Also have Imgburn verify the disc after burning it
I always use Verbatims. MK-001 to be exact (which are recommended at 2.4x write speed). And yes Imgburn. Sony Optiarc DVD RW AD-5280S is the drive I use. This is the guide I followed: http://www.se7ensins.com/forums/threads/tut-how-to-correctly-burn-xgd3-games.798973/ Also, how would I go about Improving my burns? Just wondering because this type of issue only occurs when I try to read/install Xgd3 games (Xgd2 discs install perfectly). Are there any good Xgd3 burning guides out there that use the Sony Optiarc DVD RW AD-5280S? Edit: Thank you for the post and love your profile pic btw. Lmao.
i use to have the same problem do a pot tweak first if your thinking bout getting a new laser cause it worked for me and now i dont have problems reading games and also get your self a sony optiarc 5280s cb plus burner and get some verbatims works the best for burning games
I would also say its a laser issue, Burnt games put a lot more strain on the laser than what a original copy will, it will also be harder for the console to read, it doesnt seem like your laser is too bad though however it is on its way out, Exactly what jordanp01 said, try the pot tweak first, its an easy cheap fix and will give you some time before you will need to buy a new one.
Ok then maybe it is the laser. My old phat xbox did stuff like that but i found out i was missing a step in burning. After that all was good. But your problem sounds more like the laser going. Backups take a good tear on the laser
Hey guys! I just took apart my xbox and before going out to kmart and getting myself a new multimeter, I decided to try swabbing the laser with some rubbing alcohol... And MY GOD. So far, it's read an xgd3 game in 1 TRY and it currently installing at 67% when previously it would only reach 37 then come up with an unreadable disc error! Ima do a few more tests and see if I still need to pot tweak the laser. Thank you all for the posts. I appreciate the support!
Bad burns or weak laser. Pot tweak laser first see if its any better (New laser is cheap and not hard to replace) If you do get a new laser make sure seller will remove solder ball for you. Also could be bad burns had this myself over the years and wasted many discs. Just mess about with imgburn setting till your getting good results. There are loads of tuts and settings around for Verbs also i would use MKM-003 but MKM-001 should be fine. Also remember to make sure your burner can support x2.4 speed if not you will need to edit your burner firmware.
Good to see you got it working mate if you need help with anything else make a topic and we will do what we can
Yeh I figured out that MK-003 discs were better after I bought a 50 pack of Mk-001s.. Thing is my sony Optiarc drive only supports 2.4x. So I guess it kinda worked out for me. Btw, just an update: All three Xgd3 games that had trouble reading previously now read first try!
yeah the sony drive is awesome cause u dont have to change any setting in imgburner your all good go u want to burn on slow anyways glad u got it working and btw both verbatims are good
Forza 4 won't install But plays fine... Nero DiscSpeed results: http://imgur.com/dqBwjHl I guess some Xgd3 games install perfectly while others just have more trouble...
What do you mean? I thought the burn results were good overall. Nero DiscSpeed results: http://imgur.com/dqBwjHl
Yes they are but as you say you could not install the game if the games are burnt the right way xdg2/3 they would be able to play and install. Make sure opc is on and set buffer to max ie 1024 MIB. But if your happy with what your doing then fine.
Reburned Forza 4. Here are the results: http://imgur.com/3wivweO Still stopped at 75%. I tried maxing out the buffer & recovery thresholds. But didn't turn on opc. I'll try that next.
Try cleaning the laser first, with some electrical spray on a cottonwall bud. Lightly go over the laser lens.
