MID is short for Media-ID, these are used to identify which update you need for your specific version of a game.

Soft updates are stored inside the cache partition and will not show up in the Xbox 360 storage menu.
Hard updates will appear in the storage menu and need to be saved in the game folder.

All this information is only needed if you use external tools (like xtaf for example) to copy the updates. With XBUC Sync you don't have to worry about getting the right update and where to save it.
