Famitsu has just released its figures for the sales of Microsoft's Next gen console in Japan during its first week. According to the magazine, and its publisher Enterbrain, the console has sold 23,562 from September the 4th to September 7th.

The number one selling game in Japan for the Xbox One was no suprise really, TitanFall stole the show, selling over 22416 copies during the 3 day period.
Kinect Sport Rivals was the second best selling game with 14191 untis sold and in third place was Dead Rising 3 selling just 7330 copies.
Whilst the figures were not exceptionally high, or anywhere near expectations the Japanese market is not the be all and end all. Sony had already been and conquered Japan way before Microsoft got into that territory so its not really all that surprising.
There appears to be a trend in the Japanese market with dwindling console sales of the Xbox looking at past figures.

    2002.02.22 [XBox] - 123.929 (3 days)

    2005.12.10 [XBox 360] - 62.135 (2 days)

    2014.09.04 [XBox One] - 23,562 (4 days)

Would this have been a different story if the Xbox One had launched in Japan the same time as the PS4, who knows?
Microsoft does have a foothold in China before Sony so maybe we will see a different story unfold there, with cheaper bundles, more games and also Microsoft's incentive of a free game for Chinese fans that buy an Xbox One.
