Xbox One self-publishing will support all payment models

    Speaking at PAX Prime at the weekend, Microsoft's portfolio director for digital games, Chris Charla, told Joystiq that Xbox One's [email protected] program will allow developers to implement "every business model that any other game on Xbox One has."


    "On Xbox One, games that come through [email protected] are no different than any other game," he said.

    "They have full Gamerscore, full Achievements, can take advantage of SmartGlass, Kinect - if you can do it with an Xbox One game, you can do it with anything that comes through the [email protected] program. That's like a fundamental tenet of the program."

    Announced at Gamescom last month, [email protected] will allow independent developers to self-publish on Xbox One without fees. Registered users will not be required to pay certification or title update fees, though currently developers "with a proven track record" are being prioritised for registration.

    Microsoft confirmed in July that each Xbox One console can be used as a development kit, though the functionality will not be available from launch.

    These details follow Microsoft's push for an indie-friendly console, following fears the new platform would prove too restrictive. The Xbox One marketplace will not feature distinct Xbox Live Arcade and Indie channels, with all games grouped in one wider category.
