All the crispy gamers will remember the good old fashioned NES cartridge games which you would slam into your trusty Nintendo Entertainment System and play games such as Battletoads, Bubble Bobble and Castlevania without the need of an Internet connection or a download.
One PS4 owner has decided to mix Nostalgia with current technology by modding his PS4 console to play games off of a NES style grey cartridge. Using an Ultimaker 2 3D printer, Frank Zhao, electrical engineer and DIY hobbyist set about creating a NES cartridge replica.
Although the dimensions of the replica NES cartridge are not the same dimensions as genuine NES cartridges, they do look very realistic and this mod allows Zhao to run PS4 games directly from the cartridge.
The cartridges contain a 2.5″ hard drive, where Zhao uploads the specific game he wants on the cartridge, each one will contain only one game, so this is exactly economical, but you cant put a price on nostalgia! He used a 2.5" drive rather than a 3.5″ drives simply because the larger drive would require an external 12 volt power supply, whist the 2.5″ drives only require the 5 volts feed from the motherboard of the PS4.
Zhao printed the housing unit which was then attached to the console. He then placed a SATA connector attachment inside the game housing that will connect to the PS4 console. Zhao explains that this was a tricky part of the process which he overcome with the use of some glue and a lolly stick.
"This was actually pretty hard, I ended up gluing a Popsicle stick to the connector first, and then used the stick to poke the connector inside and into the motherboard’s connector."
Games could now be inserted into the housing, once slotted into the housing the 2.5" hard drive inside the game cartridge connects to the SATA hard drive reader which is connected to the PS4 consoles motherboard, allowing the game to boot up.
