God of War: Ascension will feature a co-operative time trial mode, Sony has announced.

Called 'Trial of the Gods', the mode will allow two players to fight together against waves of over 15 different enemy types including Satyrs, Cerberuses, Cyclopes, Gorgons and Juggernauts.

The mode will have a set time limit, with the time extending after each wave based on how well the players performed.

Three maps will be available for Trial of the Gods at launch - Desert of Lost Souls, Forum of Hercules, and Rotunda of Olympus - with more planned to be added later. It is unknown if the additional maps will be through an update or released as paid DLC.

It will be possible to play Trial of the Gods alone or with another player, and the experience players earn will carry over into the game's other multiplayer modes, with Sony saying that the mode could help players transition from the single-player campaign to the team-based multiplayer modes.

God of War: Ascension will take place before the events of the original trilogy, presenting a more human side of protagonist Kratos, set in a time before his desire for vengeance consumed him.

It will be the first entry in the series to include multiplayer support, enabling up to eight players to compete in a variety of game modes and customise their characters.
