My niece posted this on facebook earlier , and it has been doing my head in since i read it ! So to all the maths boffs ,please solve this its probably simple but ..??
You borrowed £50 and gave £1 back, from each parent, making £98 loaned to you, meaning you owe £49 to each. You keep £1, leaving £97 which is the price you paid. Yes, £98 + £1 = £99, but the REAL math is £98 - £1 = £97. Adding £1 is just playing games, having no basis whatsoever in reality.
You owe them 50 each, you spend 97. 3 left. you pay off 2 you owe 98 and you have 1. They lent you 98 you spend 97 and keep 1 technically balancing itself out..
You only owe them £98 because you paid them each back £1 and the extra £1 you took for yourself... you tacked on a £ for no reason
