The rise of virtual reality gaming and 4K enabled televisions has left both Sony and Microsoft scrambling to adapt their console offerings to take advantage of the new technologies.

However, it appears that Sony have been much quicker off the mark, which could spell a big problem for Microsoft. Both companies have released information on planned updates to their flagship consoles, with Microsoft releasing the PS4 Pro and Microsoft the Xbox Scorpio.

But whereas 'Project Scorpio' isn’t being made available for release until winter 2017, the PS4 Pro will be hitting stores on 10th November 2016. This equates to a headstart of a year, or possibly more.

And a year can make a big difference. Microsoft might be in danger of losing some of their fans who don’t want to wait a whole year to be able to try out the new virtual reality technology and benefit from the enhanced specs offered by the PS4 Pro.

While it’s rumoured that the Xbox One Scorpio will (eventually) be a higher spec than the PS4 Pro, details are still a little hazy. Will the promise of higher graphics and bandwidth capabilities be enough to keep Xbox fans content? Only time will tell!

Early reports on the new PS4 Pro suggest that it is the first console with comparable power to that of a decent PC. That being said, there are only a limited amount of games that will be able to take advantage of these new features when it does hit the market.

One thing that has been confirmed is that the PS4 Pro will not support 4K Blu-ray discs, an oversight that has fans perplexed, considering the Xbox One S already has this capability, and for a lower cost too!

So, although the jury’s still out on whether or not the PS4 could be the end of the Xbox One, it seems there’s some fairly exciting developments going on in both camps!

One thing to keep in mind as a gamer who loves to mod, Xbox One for example the special edition of SKyrim will have more mods available then playstation with their new PS4, this has to do with copyright issues and legalities with mods ,I love the fact that we are finally seeing mods in the actual releases included and we can upload mods from nexus designed for that purpose / That is a downfall for me , and as far as technology versus gaming, Xbox is more on gaming with 4k etc ability when Sony will not include it.

Are there any games that are not on pc that will make use of the extra processing power? My fear is that this is Sony and to a lesser degree Microsoft admitting that they messed up with the hardware specs of the original systems. How many player will fork over money for another console when they can still play the games at a reduced graphical fidelity or with some features disabled on the original systems.

I know of at least on console only gamer who is not going to upgrade his ps4 because he will still be able to play the latest games on his current one. This could end up costing MS and Sony some very serious money if the updated consoles don't sell well enough for them to make profit on them.
