Microsoft are celebrating today, and with good reason too. Mojang, creators of one of the top 3 all time best selling games has joined forces with Microsoft Studios.

Microsoft paid $2.5 billion to acquire Mojang, the company behind Minecraft which has sold over 100 million copies on the PC platform alone since it's first release in 2009.

The rumor first surfaced last week that Microsoft were looking to buy Mojang, and was confirmed today by Phil Spencer on Xbox Wire and via an official Microsoft press release.

"Today is an incredibly exciting day for our team as Mojang and the Minecraft franchise join Microsoft." writes the head of Xbox. "Minecraft is a massive title which inspires millions to create together, connects people across the globe, and is a community that is among the most active and passionate in the world."

Everyone assumed that Minecraft would become an Xbox exclusive if Microsoft did purchase Mojang, however Phil Spencer has reassured the massive Minecraft community today by saying, "Gaming is the top activity across devices and we see great potential to continue to grow the Minecraft community and nurture the franchise. That is why we plan to continue to make Minecraft available across platforms – including iOS, Android and PlayStation, in addition to Xbox and PC."

Spencer also confirmed the game's annual convention, Minecon, would continue next year.

Mojang's Owen Hill has also released an article about the sale of Mojang in the form of a FAQ:
