New Mexico City is home to the landfill site where over 1300 failed Atari video games came to rest, but a portion of the games are set to be auctioned between now and the run up to Christmas on Ebay.

This is your chance to own a piece of video game history, Alamogordo City Council have voted to sell off over half of the video game cartridges. Amongst the games that will be auctioned is 'E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial' that is considered one of the worst games ever released. It is reported that E.T the game was rushed to coincide with the release of Steven Spielberg's 1982 classic film.

E.T. the video game sadly contributed to the collapse of the gaming industry during the early 80's with over 5 million games cartridges left unsold Atari were left with no choice other than to bury them in the New Mexico City Landfill using darkness as cover.
Atari reportedly had the games buried in the middle of the night, which is where they remained up until April of this year when they were unearthed. The games were then shipped over 200 miles away to New Mexico Museum of Space History in Alamogordo.

This really is a key part of video game history and it would be awesome to own a piece of it. We will be following the games when they go to auction to see just how much they fetch.

It certainly wouldn't be to play the game thats for sure, its more the fact that owning one of these games is owning a piece of gaming history.<br>

It was a coverup. Atari denied ever doing it. Then in April, it was proven they did it when the games were dug up in the landfill. Owning one of these cartridges just shows your dedication to the retro community, and the fact that you're holding physical proof of the greatest video-game coverup in history.
