Sony Plans To Bolster Playstation Vita Support, Too Little Too Late After Release Date?

According to MTV Geek, Sony is planning on supporting its beleaguered Vita handheld gaming device. The device launched back in February of this year and was met with massive sales drops in the following weeks, post-release. In Japan, the numbers dropped nearly 78 percent from their initial launch figures, with the system selling around two million units worldwide.


Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida had the following to say, promising to support the Vita, "Our priority right now is definitely to bring more content." This news comes during the Gamecom convention, where Sony Playstation executives were hot to showcase the Vita, despite the device losing steam in the midst of Nintendo's 3DS and the rise of mobile gaming.

When asked to elaborate on just how Sony plans on going about supporting the Vita further, Yoshida said "In terms of new content and new system and service features, we can add that, and we can work with third-parties to get more," he continued. "We're getting a very good feeling when we talk with third-party companies.  Yoshida even commented on the concept of supporting the Vita, as well as other Sony products and initiatives, "we have a lot of development employees at Worldwide Studios, so we should be able to support all of those platforms and initiatives. It's our job to makes sure that our resources are allocated well to give that support."

Sony already confirmed that a parade of PSOne classics will be hitting the Vita in the form of downloadable titles, as well as increased functionality with other Playstation products and devices. By bringing in additional developers and working on producing quality third-party titles, the Vita may begin to see new life. It'd be a shame to see such a promising device go by the wayside so early in its product life.
