Also try uninstalling some un-used/un-needed programs.

Keep in mind Having a BUNCH of files (that are NOT shortcuts) could also cause a PC's performance to drop.
    But as already stated:
    • Defragmentation of the Disk your OS is on (UNLESS its on a Solid-State Drive, which will likely --but not definitely -- cause damage to a SSD) will help alot.
    • Increasing the RAM of your PC (as much as your Motherboard can handle.)
    • Keep in mind, Maleware can also cause PC performance to drop as well, run a scan monthly or bi-weekly if you need to.
Those are just a few that can get you started.

Run MSCONFIG. In the start up tab, Look for program names that seem familiar. If it isn't Important, disable it from starting with the computer.

Set up a disk clean up to run on saturday morning around 2am. Then set the defrag to run on sunday morning at 2am.

Go to your command prompt and go to programs. Remove any unused programs that you recognise. If you are not sure, leave it.

Run a registry cleaning tool. The registry gets bogged down with errors sometimes and causes major issues in speed.

Everything else mentioned thus far in the replys should be tried also.

Yes, running a registry cleaner is a good idea as well. Just make sure you don't over do it. Monthly kind of thing, doing it too frequently can actually mess your computer up.

Also, 8GB + Ram is normally a really good start as well as at least having a newer processor from the year 2011 - 2012.

I have 8GB Ram and a Intel Core i5 2500k CPU @ 3.30 Ghz. My computer runs like a charm but i want another 8GB Ram.
